Marcus Coesfeld becomes new director of the Celtic World at Glauberg

Dr. Vera Rupp retires after twelve years at the helm of the State Archaeological Museum

Wiesbaden. At the end of the year, Dr Vera Rupp, the long-standing director of Keltenwelt am Glauberg and deputy state archaeologist of Hesse, will retire. Marcus Coesfeld will take over as Director of the Celtic World on 1 January 2024. The Hessian Minister for Science and Art, Angela Dorn, and State Archaeologist Prof. Dr Udo Recker pay tribute to the outstanding achievements of Dr Vera Rupp and express their heartfelt thanks for her exceptional personal commitment to the Celtic World at Glauberg and the archaeological preservation of monuments in Hesse.

One of the most successful archaeological museums of the Iron Age

"Dr. Vera Rupp took over the management of the Celtic World at Glauberg shortly after the museum opened in 2011 and made the house what it is today: a popular state museum and one of the most successful archaeological museums on the Iron Age in Europe. I would like to thank her very much for her work," explains Hesse's Minister for Science and Art, Angela Dorn. "The Glauberg provides a fascinating insight into the culture of the Iron Age and in particular into the close exchange between the early Celtic culture in Europe and with the Mediterranean cultures - the museum makes this tangible with its rich artefacts, which are significant throughout Europe. I wish the future director Marcus Coesfeld every success and a lucky hand in further developing the Celtic world."

"Scientific and popular science publications, annual special exhibitions and numerous events at the museum and in the region can be traced back to the initiative of Dr Vera Rupp and the Celtic World team, as well as important infrastructure measures such as the expansion of the museum garden. They have cemented the Glauberg's position in the national and European museum landscape, in international research and as a tourist destination," adds the Hessian state archaeologist, Prof. Dr. Udo Recker. The Celtic World is part of hessenARCHÄOLOGIE at the Hesse State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments (LfDH). "Under the direction of Dr Vera Rupp, the three-pillar concept of the museum, consisting of a museum, archaeological park and research centre, was gradually implemented. Thanks to the state's decision to build a new research centre, she has helped launch the necessary architectural competition for the final expansion phase in recent months."

His successor was most recently project manager of a digital history workshop

Dr Vera Rupp will be succeeded as Director by Marcus Coesfeld on 1 January 2024. He has successfully completed a degree in German studies, history and educational science. After a scientific traineeship at the LWL Museum of Archaeology and Culture - Westphalian State Museum in Herne, he took over the museum education department at the Oerlinghausen Archaeological Open-Air Museum before becoming museum director at the Archaeological Research Centre and Museum of Human Behavioural Evolution - Monrepos, an institution of the Leibniz Research Institute for Archaeology (LEIZA) in Neuwied. Most recently, he worked at the Oerlinghausen Archaeological Open-Air Museum as project manager of a digital history workshop. He will be assisted by Christoph Röder, who took over the newly created position of Deputy Director in May 2023 and will be in charge of the museum and the archaeological park in future.

A Ceremony to mark the handover of office in the Keltenwelt am Glauberg is planned for Thursday, January 11, 2024; also present will be the State Secretary in the Ministry of Science and Art, Ms. Ayse Asar, the President of the State Office for the Preservation of Monuments in Hesse, Prof. Dr. Markus Harzenetter, and State Archaeologist Prof. Dr. Udo Recker. The new directorate will introduce itself in the presence of the state archaeologist on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at a Press conference to the journalists. A press invitation for both dates will follow.
