The origins of Konradsdorf Monastery in the Wetterau region likely date back to an early medieval manor house. First documented in 1191, it reached its heyday as a women's monastery of the Premonstratensian Order in the 13th and 14th centuries with 64 nuns and four clergymen—a remarkable number for a women's convent of the time.
However, the Reformation brought with it the beginning of the monastery's decline, and it was finally dissolved in 1581. The complex was transformed into a farm estate, and the Thirty Years' War also caused damage to the building structure. The remains of the former cloister were eventually demolished. Since the mid-19th century, Konradsdorf has been a state domain.
The two preserved buildings are among the most important Romanesque structures in Hesse. Research into the church and the provost's house has yielded groundbreaking insights, making Konradsdorf one of the most archaeologically researched medieval monasteries in the state. Since 2016, the state of Hesse has provided funds for the fundamental renovation and restoration of the former monastery church and the provost's house. Following conservation-compliant restoration, this gem from the Hohenstaufen period is now open to the public once again.
