Workshop: Copper Bowls

Masterfully hammered jugs, kettles and bowls made of copper and gold are evidence of the high level of craftsmanship, experience and skill in the non-ferrous metal craft of the Iron Age. Alongside gold, copper in its pure form is one of the metals that is best suited to cold working; for example, a three-dimensional object can be formed from a flat sheet of copper by hammering, chasing and punching with a hammer.

In the workshop, participants will try out the basics of cold forming pure copper using hammers and punches: by hammering and driving a sheet of copper into a handy bowl, they will learn the limits of metallic elasticity and the need for repeated annealing during the forming process. Depending on your wishes and your craftsmanship, the bowls can be fitted with functional and/or decorative handle attachments - based on Iron Age models.
