Workshop: Comb weaving – Nordic style based on Viking motifs
There is evidence of comb-woven borders dating back to the Hallstatt period (around 750 BC). The technique is still widespread in various countries around the Baltic Sea. Although no pure comb-woven borders from the Viking Age have (yet) been found, the knowledge of this technique was present. Based on textile finds from the Viking Age ship burial at Oseberg, elements of carpets have been adapted for this workshop to incorporate comb weaving techniques. We will explain weaving preparation (warp tensioning) and the weaving technique itself, and provide assistance with both. The fundamentals of pattern creation, highlighting key aspects to consider, will also be covered. Participants will begin a sampler band on this day, enabling them to design and weave further patterns at home. Each participant will have a choice of three different patterns to take home.
The comb weaving tool is made of wood and can be brought along if you have one or purchased at cost price after registering for the course.
After registering by email to natur-kulturfuehrer@freenet.de, participants will receive a list of materials and tools they need to bring.
