Celtic World lecture: How iron came into the world – the beginnings of iron smelting in Central Europe.
Lecture by Prof. Dr. Michael Meyer
Iron is a raw material that is indispensable in today's world. This presentation will introduce its origins: for at least 2,500 years, iron ore has been smelted into iron in bloomery furnaces – the precursor to the blast furnaces we know today. Not all regions were receptive to this innovation: the introduction of iron smelting was a centuries-long process. The technologies used will be presented, as well as the economic, social, and religious consequences that this important innovation had for early societies.
The image shows a bloomery furnace from the 4th century BC, which was uncovered during the excavation in Glienick in the state of Brandenburg.
