Celtic World Forum: Resistance is futile!? The region around the “Hunnenring” near Otzenhausen in Celtic-Roman times.

Lecture by Prof. Dr. Sabine Hornung – University of Saarbrücken

With its 10 m high northern wall, the Hunnenring near Otzenhausen has always been one of the most impressive oppida of the late Iron Age Treveri tribe. The recent discovery of a Roman military camp in neighboring Hermeskeil also made it one of the historical sites of Julius Caesar's Gallic War. The lecture aims to breathe new life into this eventful history of the Treveri by examining the events for the first time from the perspective of the conquered. Starting from a cultural flowering of the Treveri tribal area in the late 2nd and early 1st century BC, the focus is therefore initially on current research into the Roman conquest and its consequences for the local population. However, these events were only the beginning of a process of cultural change known as Romanization, which ultimately made the Treveri Romans, without their Celtic heritage ever being completely forgotten.
