From the Castle to the City – The Medieval Glauberg and the Staufers
On Sunday, October 16, there is an interesting autumn walk on the 2.5 km long Celtic World Trail. Between 12 and 4 p.m., there are several stations where you will meet experts who will tell you about the latest research on the Middle Ages. It is interesting to note that the Glauberg played a special role in the 13th century. The noble families became involved in the conflict between the Hohenstaufen Emperor Frederick II and Pope Gregory IX.
The Glauberg is known far beyond Hesse as a Celtic princely seat. But its medieval history is also of great importance. Many traces of the former castle and town foundation can still be seen on the mountain plateau. Among them are seven house cellars in a row. They belonged to a row of houses that stood on the mountain around 1250. Elsewhere you can find the ruins of a tower castle. There are even signs of a tournament ground on the plateau. These traces show that the castle, used by several noble families, was to be expanded into a town. But this plan failed. The centuries-old cellars are now to be protected as a monument and can be experienced up close again. That is why specialist companies are currently working on this project.
