Archaeology Theme Weekend: Stone

Stone has accompanied humankind for millennia: as a tool, building material, millstone, and work of art. This special themed weekend will take us on a fascinating journey through the history of stone – from the first Stone Age tools and the production of flour with historical millstones to the impressive sandstone statue of the Celtic prince.

Look forward to demonstrations, hands-on activities, and exciting insights into the work of archaeologists, stonemasons, and geologists. Experience traditional stone-working techniques, discover the fascinating world of volcanic rocks, and learn more about the formation and use of stone in the past and present.

Program highlights

  • The Volcanological Society and the Michelnau quarry present interesting facts about rocks and their formation.
  • Historical flour milling and baking demonstrations – participate in!.
  • Archaeotechnician Wulf Hein demonstrates Stone Age techniques and the use of stone tools.
  • Children can paint a stone figure and create their own work of art (paid offer).
  • Special presentation on the statue of the Celtic prince with an exhibition of various replicas.

Experience stonemasonry live

Several stonemasons demonstrate their craftsmanship and provide insights into traditional and modern processing techniques:

  • Susanne Gerschlauer – Information booth and demonstrations on stonemasonry
  • Jens-Peter Gregersen – Presentation of stonemasonry work, including the head of the prince statue and the stone relief of the lid animal of the tubular jug.

During the archaeology-themed weekend, we offer a program from 10 am to 6 pm. free shuttle bus service between the Glauberg train station and the Museum to.
Anyone arriving by public transport or parking their car at the train station will be conveniently taken to us.
