Keltenwelt-Forum: La Tène, at the origins of Celtic archaeology
Lecture by Prof. Marc-Antoine Kaeser – Laténium
The La Tène site, discovered on the shores of Lake Neuchâtel in 1857, played a decisive role in the development of Celtic archaeology. But more than a century and a half after the first investigations, archaeologists are still arguing about the interpretation of the site: was it a fortified settlement, a customs post, a battlefield or a sanctuary dedicated to the Celtic war gods?
The lecture traces the history of research and presents the first results of an extensive research project that has been carried out at the Laténium since 2007 in collaboration with numerous institutions in Switzerland, France, Great Britain, Germany and the United States.
