Celtic coins in Brandenburg and what does Hesse have to do with it?
Lecture by Marjanko Pilekić MA – Coin Cabinet Stiftung Schloss Friedenstein, Gotha
and Dr. Axel G. Posluschny – Celtic World at Glauberg
In 2017, a volunteer monument conservationist found some Celtic gold coins (so-called rainbow bowls) in Baitz, Brandenburg. During the subsequent systematic follow-up investigation and excavation on site, A total of 41 coins of the same type were found. The discovery of such coins - the second largest hoard of rainbow bowls of this type - represents a numismatic sensation, especially so far away from the usual distribution area in Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Hesse. A few years later, another coin of the same type was found in Hesse - but it has more than just the type in common with the coins from Brandenburg. The main part of the lecture will present the sensational find from Baitz, while the second part will examine the new discovery of the Hessian rainbow bowl and its completely unexpected relationship to the Baitz coins.
