Celtic World Lecture: Restoration of Konradsdorf Monastery

Lecture by Dr. Anja Dötsch (State Palaces and Gardens) and Susanne Gerschlauer MA

The former Premonstratensian monastery of Konradsdorf in the eastern Wetterau was previously only known to a small circle of experts. The early abandonment of the monastery in the 16th century, damage during the Thirty Years' War and intensive agricultural use meant that the monastery fell into oblivion. Of the monastery buildings, only the monastery church and the provost's building have survived above ground. Around 1200 years have left their mark in Konradsdorf.

When the state of Hesse provided funds for the restoration of the monastery buildings in 2016, it quickly became clear that both buildings had a complex structural inventory. The various layers were partially only fragmentarily preserved and required careful building research in order to be able to identify them, preserve them and ultimately present them in a cultural-historical context. The building research and inventory analysis provided the indispensable basis for the monument conservation target concept and the restoration.

The lecture will shed light on the history and the architectural findings and will present the conservation-related restoration of the former monastery buildings that was developed in this context.
