Keltenwelt-Forum: New Celtic Architectural Models

CANCELLED

Lecture by Dr. Wolfgang Lobisser, VIAS – Vienna Institute for Archaeological Science, University of Vienna

In the 2nd century BC, the Celts established a large town-like settlement in Schwarzenbach (Lower Austria) in the Bucklige Welt, which had an internal area of about 15 hectares and was protected by a fortification up to 7 meters high. It can be assumed that the inhabitants were nobles and traders, but also craftsmen and farmers. As early as 2002, the municipality of Schwarzenbach commissioned VIAS, an interdisciplinary research facility at the University of Vienna, to set up an open-air archaeological area in the spirit of experimental archaeology in order to reconstruct parts of the Celtic town. By 2005, a total of seven archaeological building reconstructions had been built on the castle hill, allowing visitors extensive insights into various areas of Celtic everyday life, using only building materials that were also available in the Iron Age.
