Celtic World Forum: Of clay pots and longhouses – The Middle Neolithic in the Wetterau and at Glauberg
Lecture by Dr. Stefan Suhrbier, University of Cologne
The Wetterau region has been an attractive settlement region since people first settled in Central Europe around 5400 BC. The first farmers made vessels decorated with bands running around the edges, and are therefore referred to as the "Linear Pottery Culture". The subsequent groups of the "Southwest German Middle Neolithic" can also be recognized by their characteristic decorative motifs.
Now the clay vessels are decorated with elaborate motifs such as garlands and chevrons. In no other phase of the Neolithic period is the decoration of the ceramics so delicate and elaborate. Traces of the Middle Neolithic "Rössen culture group" can also be found at Glauberg. The settlements were characterized by longhouses, some of which were very large. But there were also sometimes fenced-in "gardens", outbuildings and enclosing ditches. Such a ditch has also been found at Glauberg. The lecture will present the material remains of this period, with a focus on the rich settlement landscape of the Wetterau.
