Celtic World Forum: Carved in stone – Right-bank millstones of the early Iron Age as a source of livelihood and as an economic asset
Lecture by Vera Holtmeyer-Wild MA
Iron Age millstones for grain, but also for salt and mined raw materials were not only mined in the famous millstone quarries near Mayen in the Eifel. They were also produced east of the Rhine from local lava rocks in the Vogelsberg and Westerwald. These local productions, which have recently been the focus of research, have their own range of forms with connections as far as southern Europe. In addition, the finds, as elementary devices for food production, have a high social, cultural and economic historical significance for archaeological research.
