Celtic World Forum: A center on the edge of the Celtic world – the Staffelberg in Upper Franconia
Lecture by Dr. Markus Schußmann
During the early La Tène period, a mighty castle complex existed on the Staffelberg, which dominates the landscape, and its inhabitants ruled the region on the Upper Main. Despite considerable infrastructure construction and connections to the southern Alpine region, it was not able to rise to become a "princely seat" and perished during the period of the "Celtic migrations".
It was not until the late Celtic period that people settled here again and founded a town in the newly structured settlement landscape. We do not yet know the economic basis of this only oppidum in Franconia, but again there is evidence of connections to the south and its elaborate fortifications clearly speak a language of power and representation.
