Lecture by Dr. Martin Hees
Salt Production and Salt Trade in the Iron Age in Southern Germany
In the Hallstatt and La Tène periods, salt was mainly extracted from spring brine in Central Europe. Saltworks were built at saline springs, using different boiling processes. Archaeological research over the last 20 years has brought new insights into the development of saltworks sites, the techniques used and the trade in salt. Experimental archaeology makes an important contribution to the study of Iron Age salt production.
