Celtic World Forum: Environmental Changes Through and Reflected by Hallstatt Salt Mining
Lecture by Dr. Kerstin Kowarik / Dr. Hans Rereiter – NHM Vienna
People and the Environment around Hallstatt Salt
Salt has been produced in Hallstatt for 7,000 years. This long history of production has shaped the entire region around the salt mountain and made it a very special industrial and cultural landscape. The Natural History Museum and its research partners are studying the changes in this landscape from the Ice Age to the present day - and can thus trace the change from the primeval landscape to the emergence of an industrial landscape and today - to a tourist hotspot.
