Open Excavation Day 2023

Excavation team back at Glauberg

Invitation to the Open Excavation Day

Our research center invites you to an open excavation day on Saturday, September 9, 2023, between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The excavations at Glauberg have always produced interesting results in recent years. But despite the good scientific starting point, there are still questions about the significance of Glauberg and its integration into the surrounding settlement landscape. This also includes the connection to Enzheimer Kopf. "This year we therefore focused the excavation on the wooded hilltop that lies in the immediate vicinity of Glauberg," explains Dr. Axel Posluschny, head of the Celtic World Research Center at Glauberg. Archaeological traces were identified here during site visits with the support of the Glauburg Local History and Heritage Association. The relics provide the first indications of activities in the late Bronze Age around 3,000 years ago. Further traces point to the early Celtic period, when Glauberg was the site of an important center of power around 400 BC.

The research began this week in cooperation with the Hessian State Archaeology Department and with the participation of students from the universities of Frankfurt and Marburg as well as Deventer in the Netherlands, Winchester in England and Copenhagen in Denmark. "We are very excited about the results," said Posluschny about the excavation, which will run until September 15th.

Since there are no parking spaces at Enzheimer Kopf, the parking spaces at the Museum of the Celtic World at Glauberg are available. The path to the excavation site is signposted and the walk takes around 20 to 30 minutes. A map is available to take away from the museum ticket office. Sturdy shoes are recommended.
