Celtic World Lecture: The history of the early Celtic princely seat on the Ipf at the Nördlinger Ries from the Bronze Age to the Late La Tène period

The Ipf is as unusual as the landscape at its foot: the now flat plain of the Nördlinger Ries was a former crater formed by the massive impact of an asteroid 14.5 million years ago. To the west, the striking and far-reaching 668-meter-high Ipf rises majestically above the landscape, against the backdrop of the eastern Swabian Alb. This mighty outlier of the White Jurassic limestone, with its extensive fortifications, is an impressive and significant archaeological monument. The fortifications on the Ipf were extensively expanded during the Urnfield culture around 1000 BC, and processes of concentration laid the foundations for the Ipf's rise to an "early Celtic" princely seat during the Hallstatt and Early La Tène periods.
Around the Ipf mountain, between the Eastern Swabian Alps and the Nördlinger Ries crater, lies a settlement area whose development extends from the Late Bronze Age through the Early and Late Iron Ages to the end of the Celtic square enclosures. Together with the results of archaeobotany, a settlement dynamic can be reconstructed that is characterized by several changes and, for the first time in an Iron Age settlement area, reveals a continuous development from the Late Bronze Age to the end of the square enclosures in the 1st century BC.
