Celtic World Lecture: Culinaria Romana – A Look into the Romans' Cooking Pot
Culinaria Romana: A glimpse into the Romans' cooking pot
Lecture by Dr. Carsten Amrhein (Director) Saalburg Roman fort
Perhaps no ancient topic is as riddled with clichés as Roman eating and drinking habits. Watching certain films or reading relevant comics gives the impression that the Romans constantly held orgies with copious amounts of food and drink.
This image is based on ancient satires that present these highly exaggerated depictions of real conditions. The diet of the Romans, especially the less wealthy, was actually much simpler. Using original texts, archaeological finds, and illustrations, the lecture describes Roman cuisine, its surprising preferences, and everyday habits.
