Celtic World Lecture: Restoration of Konradsdorf Monastery
Instandsetzung des Klosters Konradsdorf
Lecture by Dr. Anja Dötsch (State Palaces and Gardens) and Susanne Gerschlauer MA (Celtic World at Glauberg)
The former Premonstratensian monastery of Konradsdorf in the eastern Wetterau was previously only known to a small circle of experts. The early abandonment of the monastery in the 16th century, damage during the Thirty Years' War and intensive agricultural use meant that the monastery fell into oblivion. Of the monastery buildings, only the monastery church and the provost's building have survived above ground. Around 1200 years have left their mark in Konradsdorf.
When the state of Hesse provided funds for the restoration of the monastery buildings in 2016, it quickly became clear that both buildings had a complex structural inventory. The various layers were partially only fragmentarily preserved and required careful building research in order to be able to identify them, preserve them and ultimately present them in a cultural-historical context. The building research and inventory analysis provided the indispensable basis for the monument conservation target concept and the restoration.
In the first part of the lecture, the history and the architectural findings will be examined and the conservation restoration of the former monastery buildings developed in this context will be presented.
The second part of the lecture will focus on the Premonstratensian nuns in the Wetterau region during the Middle Ages. The late 12th and early 13th centuries saw a peak in the founding of religious orders and monasteries – not only in the Wetterau region – including Konradsdorf Monastery, which was founded in the second half of the 12th century. In present-day Hesse alone, 16 monasteries of the Premonstratensian Order were established during this period. For example, the former double monastery of Ilbenstadt (late 12th century) was located in the immediate vicinity of Konradsdorf.
This lecture aims to provide some insights into the significance of religiosity in the estate-based society of the High and Late Middle Ages in the Wetterau region. Among other things, it will focus on the impact of the founding of reform orders, including the Premonstratensians, on the social environment.
The general question is raised as to the possible influence of the emerging monastic system on the statically structured class society. It is also examined whether the numerous monasteries founded in the 12th and 13th centuries and the monastic activities in the region brought about changes in the social structure. Several sources – some from Konradsdorf – provide information on the daily life of the Premonstratensian nuns and their social role, and examples are presented. It is shown how important the sisters' origins were for the economic prosperity of the monastery. In the course of the Reformation in the 16th century, many monasteries were dissolved. How did the dissolution take place, and what became of the monasteries afterward?
This sketchy lecture can only briefly address some of the questions. The main aim is to convey a sense of the period of monastery life. The Liturgy of the Hours, with its intercessions for the salvation of the souls of fellow human beings, was an integral part of the women's daily life in the monastery.
