Archaeology Theme Weekend: Nutrition
Celtic Cuisine – Food in the Iron Age
Cooking, baking, roasting, grilling… and of course, eating. Nutrition and food preparation were an important part of daily life in the Iron Age. What plants were cultivated? What was on the table? How were grains, vegetables, herbs, meat, and other foods processed and prepared?
Even though no recipes from the Iron Age have survived, archaeological finds and discoveries offer fascinating insights into the diet of that time. Plant remains, animal bones, vessels, tools, and hearths reveal much about the cultivation, storage, processing, and preparation of food.
As part of the State Garden Show 2027 The Celtic World at Glauberg invites visitors to discover "Celtic cuisine" with all their senses. From the cultivation and use of plants to animal husbandry and food storage, and from kitchen utensils and ovens to hearths, the themed weekend demonstrates just how diverse the diet in the Iron Age may have been.
Demonstrations, hands-on activities, and tastings bring history to life. Because here, the following applies in particular: Practice makes perfect!
