Archaeo-workshop “Metal punching”

How were the things that we can still admire today behind glass in the museum made? In the future, specialists in archaeotechnology will come to Glauberg to get to the bottom of this very question. The new archaeo-workshop offers a focus on Celtic craftsmanship and teaches it in a very practical way. You can look over the shoulders of the craftsmen and women as they work, listen to their explanations and be inspired by the reconstructed craft techniques of the Celts.

This Sunday we will explore the question of how easily metal can be deformed by cold working with a hammer and handy iron tools? For example, how much can pure copper be stretched and pushed before it breaks?

"Punching" is a technique that began at the end of the Stone Age - in the Copper Age. Over thousands of years, resourceful people have found creative solutions for this type of deformation and decoration of non-ferrous metal artifacts. In the Bronze and Iron Ages, these techniques reached the highest level of artistry with various metal punches on jugs, kettles, belt plates and sword scabbards.

The chipless, cold deformation of copper using various tools is clearly demonstrated in our archaeo-workshop.
