3. Vortrag der Otto-Herman Frey-Vortragsreihe
September 3, 2026

3rd lecture in the Otto-Herman Frey lecture series

The early Iron Age statues from Glauberg and their European relatives

Lecture by Dr. Axel G. Posluschny

The discovery of the completely preserved sandstone statue and the fragments of at least three similar statues at Glauberg in 1996 marked one of the most significant finds in the study of the Early Iron Age. This lecture places the Glauberg statues in the context of comparable stone sculptures from the 6th to 4th centuries BC. The focus will be on questions concerning their possible models, the meaning of the leaf cap, linothorax, and hand position, as well as the reasons for the deliberate destruction of several figures.
