The world of the Celts at Glauberg – New detailed photos show magnificent artistic creations

Mythical creatures, horses, birds, predators, geometric and floral patterns – the 2400-year-old grave finds from Glauberg are richly decorated with these motifs.

The "Celtic prince of Glauberg", who died between the ages of 21 and 28, was equipped with valuable weapons and special jewellery. His 78 cm long iron sword is still encased in a bronze scabbard covered with the finest engravings. Its gold-coloured bronze and the round inlays of red coral, imported from the Mediterranean, certainly created a striking play of colours. This sword was certainly a real eye-catcher. We are showing two detailed photos here for the first time, which give an impression of this high level of craftsmanship.

Discovering such a magnificent sword during excavations is a real stroke of luck for archaeology and art history. It can be assumed that only members of the Celtic elite could afford such equipment. The 30-40 year old man from grave 2 also had an equally splendidly decorated sword with him. Both pieces can be seen in their original form in our museum.
